4C’s of Mental Toughness

4C’s of Mental Toughness

What makes someone a great leader, great parent, great mentor or someone who preservers through their life struggle? Why do some people accomplish their goals while others fail? What makes the difference?

As human beings, we automatically form assumptions as to why someone accomplished their goals; ‘He must be the fastest guy in class’, ‘Her family is smart so she has to be brilliant’ or ‘Someone must have given him a lot of money, that why he is so rich’.

Although we may not want to admit it, but we know there is more to the story than our assumptions. If you actually think about it, talent and intelligence do not play nearly as big of a role as you might think. Research studies have found that talent and intelligence accounts for 30% of your success and mental toughness accounts for the remainder.

Mental toughness is more important than anything else for achieving your life goals.

Mental Toughness is a mindset, which the default response we make when faced with stressors, pressures or challenges. Mental Toughness can be defined by these four strategies:

  • Control- The degree to which people feel in control of their lives and circumstances, as well as one controls their emotions.

  • Commitment- How committed are you to set, complete and achieve your goals?

  • Challenge- The degree in which you will push the boundaries, accept change and endure the risk.

  • Confidence- Do you truly believe in yourself? You can do it.

Developing Mental Toughness requires you to be open-minded to positive thinking, self-awareness, goal setting and anxiety control.
